I have a 1984 jayco moterhome with a ford 460 in it with 61000 miles on it. we dont drive this very often so the problem started about 2 years ago we were about an hour into our trip doing 70 mph lost power and couldnt get it over 20 mph i drove about 5 miles and pulled over and checked fuel filter and anything else that i could in a parking lot it would idle just fine but not run over 20 after about an hour it started to run normal we took of and made it to our destination and back home. The problem is that it has happed twice now since then and the newest problem is it will start and run just fine till about 65 mph and starts to run bad and under 65 runs just fine. i will also note that after the first time it did it when i got home i changed the plugs wires cap and fuel filter any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance
Check the fuel lines sounds like the rubber line some where is collapsing or your sucking Air--small pin hole in it-Change the fuel filter not just check it-the fuel pump might be failing as well..--also check the fuel tank vent---it mud daubbers have stopped it up---the fuel pump is working as hard as it can at high speed---no air going into tank to replace Fuel---also check fuel tank cap--

Thanks for the reply....I replaced the fuel filter and all the rubber hoses and I ran it for about 5 miles with the gas caps off. The RV has 2 gas tanks and the problem happens with both tanks not just one. It runs great until I get to about 65mph and then it just bogs down and sometimes back fires through the carborator. When I let off the gas petal the power comes back but as soon as it gets back to 65 it does the same thing again. It will not go over about 65 mph. I will also note that someone has put an electric fuel pump on it, don't know if this makes a difference but thought I would mention it. Thanks again for the reply....any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I drove the RV today with dog house off of it and noticed when i got it to about 65 the exhaust manifolds on both sides were turning red. The catalytic converter has already been removed buy the previous owner and has a new muffler on it the muffler has about two thousand miles on it what else can it be any help would be greatly appreciated.
Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the muffler and run the motor with the muffler disconected & supported by a wire.
If the manifold doesn't glow than it is a restriction in the muffler/s.
If it still glows then disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold and run it again.
There is a restriction in the exhaust side somewhere.
The previous suggestion of mud daubbers/wasps is correct.
When you let the vehicle sit for a while all kinds of critters move in.
You should check also any air intake pipes for the fridge/hot water heater/ furnace and the engine itself, they may also be plugged.
If this is the case, next time shove some oily rags in the muffler and any other orifice, just remember to yank em out.
Also by overheating the heads that much you may have cracked an exhaust valve.
When cool the valve will seal the chamber and run good until it heats up and the crack expands causing a loss of compression.
You should pull the spark plugs and check for any damage.
If the motor was running correctly there should be a nice brownish to tan color on them.
