Engine is leaking oil...I believe it is the head gasket...Not being a mechanic, I have been told that the engine would have to be removed to accomplish this repair. Sounds like a big job....Anyone confirm this????
Normally, the motor does not have to be removed since it is the head (the top 1/3 of the engine that is bolted to the top of the block) that needs to be removed. It is a big job since just about everything attached to the engine itself has to be removed to get the head offie hoses, wiring carb etc.
Leaking oil does not necessarily mean it is the head gasket though. Is the vehicle overheating? Is the oil a milky light brown color when you pull the dip stick out? That means there is water in the oil and is a more definitive sign that the head gasket is gone. Also any hissing or steam when the engine is running or evidence of antifreeze around the block? Also run the vehicle with the radiator cap off and check for air bubbles. Your problem may be as simple as oil leaks around the rocker arm cover. Hope that is the case.

Thank you for your reply on my oil leak. I now believe that my oil leak is NOT from the head gasket but from the oil pan. And that I've been told that there is a crossover frame part that won't allow easy removal of the oil pan gasket. Resulting in the removal of the entire engine. It is on a 1978 (not 1976)Dodge frame
