My generator will not start through normally pushing the start button on the dash or at the generator. I found an solenoid under my 87 allegra coach which is bad so I will replace. One positive cable goes to this solenoid which goes to my battery the other positive cable goes to my house batteries which also acts as my emergency power. When I push my emergency power button in my generator will start but as soon as I let go of the button, and I have done this before, the generator stays running. Now as soon as I let go of my emergency power button, the generator dies. Please help?????
Sounds like you might have lost a ground or have faulty connection. When activating the emergency start button the gen starts up then it sound like the engin batterys are eather dead or have a bad connection. dose the gen start when the main drive engine is running? Some motorhomes the gen set was wired to the main starting batterys due to the small "starting" load of the gen set. I would start by trying to locate the pos batt cable from the gen set and see where it goes. also check to make sure the gen is grounded. When the gen is running the gen then makes it own power to keep it self running. The newer gens dont do that any more and require out side battery power to keep it running. Dont know why.
Good luck.
I had a similar problem. It turned out that someone had adjusted the overspeed control to make the generator run faster. The overspeed control will shut the gen motor down when it exceeds 1800 RPM.
