I went to replace the gas thermostat on my Suburban water heater. The new one had a plastic covering on the copper rod. I thought it was just to protect the rod in shipping and took it off. When I took out the old thermostat it looks like the plastic cover was on the rod although it was badly corroded so hard to tell. Did I make a mistake and what will happen if I install it without the plastic on the copper rod?
