I own a 1981 International S1700 school bus. Top speed on the road is 63 64 mph. What can I do to improve this or what can I look for to see if it is governed down ?
I don't know your particular model so here goes. Do you have a tachometer that displays engine RPM? If you do compare the maximum engine speed it gets to in a lower gear then the RPM it gets to at top speed. If they are equal it means the engine max spped govener is holding you back. If the RPM id lower at max speed there is a road speed govener set for safety by who ever owned it before you. The local cornbinder dealership will be able to reset it and tell you what the max permissible engine RPM is. Good Luck
Wow...345 with a vacuum governor. You won't get more than you have now without overspeeding the engine. The differential ratio is your problem. To get any power out of the 345, the rear gearing is low. If you change the ratio and go higher, you will be downshifting on every little hill. And, yes it is a small engine in today's time.
Without going to a larger engine and a higher ratio, I think you are stuck where you are.
I have an S1700 school bus big engine, engine tag on firewall says CH811437 9-17-08, 5 speed runs, no smoke, fair offer take all will send pictures, seats removed used for storage, Ed 718 448 5356
Ok changing the rear gearing would be a less expensive way to go but I understand small hills what about big hills. Like mountains. What a tranny change in conjunction with ring and planetary make things any better. I ask these questions because engine changeout would start near or around 5 thousand. Much as I would love a deisel I cant afford to spend that much. I would be better off to sell and buy up. Your comments and Bubba the bus tech's are greatly respected. Please over some......
Do you have a 2 speed rear? I presently am selling a 1981 s1700 schol bus with 5 speed tran has a 2 speed rear, runs good, dont know top speed, could jack wheel up and buz it up? but wouldnt be any vacume drop as on a hill, used it for storage last 10 years, i dont know the ratios could email pictures and vin # located in Staten Island NY, 718-448-5356
I checked the sticker on the fire wall and it says it is a V345 with a 2210C carb and a throttle modulater. Does this help you any. By the way that engine sure does look small for such a big engine compartment. I appreciate the help. I may get this bus/rv off the ground yet....
