I'm considering the purchase of a 2005 Freightliner MT-45 with an 11'body by Utilimaster. This is a FedEx Home Delivery spec van with an MB904 175 hp and Allison 5sp OD transmission. It has single rear wheels with 19.5 rubber and a GVWR of 14,000lbs. The odometer was replaced under warranty and the dealer says it has just over 21,000 actual miles. I plan to use this truck as an Electrical contracting vehicle. Any advise, experience, cautions before I jump into this?
I would use caution, I'm a Fedex contractor on the Ground side of the house. Fedex Home Delivery consist mainly of residential deliveries which mean alot of driving. If it's been used for 2 or more years it more then like has more then 21000 miles. I've driven my friend's truck and when the roadway gets wet they tend to slide real easy. For your purpose as a electrical service vehicle. Considering the weight you're dealing with I would suggest a vehicle with double wheels in the rear.
George,
Thanks for the reply. I was concerned about the actual mileage and also that there are no maintenance records available. I think that I would be OK weight wise since the GVWR is 14,120 and maybe with constant load the truck would handle better and tires last longer. I did wonder about the MB904 engine having enough power to move the truck out in traffic and on the interstate fully loaded. I found out today that the truck does not have A/C so I am going to pass on this one.
