Squeaking belts Fred 2-13-08
Hello,
I have a 95 Fleetwood Flair w/Ford 460.
When I start her up there is a loud squeaking from a belt I'm guessing. It squeaks for about 10 to 15 mins then goes away. I see on my batt. meter on the dash drops and back to normal. It does this for a while. And when I put the furnace on it starts squeaking again but eventually stops. I've had the belt replaced and was told it shouldnt do it anymore...any ideas?..and should the battery go dead if its been sitting for more than a week or two?...any help is appreciated.
Fred

First the belt. It sounds like you have a belt that squeeks under load. If the alternater belt is a v belt removing the belt and sanding the pullies may halp. A serpentine belt I have changed the brand belt from what is not working now with good results. But it is just like a squeeling tire. By the way if your alternater is running away(producing to much power) it can cause this and many other problems. The battery on the coach or house will go dead over 1 week to a month on most RVs. This is caused by the draws from the board in the fridge, water heater, furnace, stereo, etc. The only way to stop or prevent it is to disconect the batteries. The engine start battery may go dead just as quick, but this depends on what is hooked up and what type of engine andf trans computors are in it. Again charge them fully and disconect them. It is easy and cheap to buy simple disconects and install them. Good Luck

Hello. I have had the same problem for some time with squeeking. Tuesday, I got on the highway and the noise was terrible. It eventually stopped, as usual, but this time the battery indicator showed that the batteries were practically dead. I returned home to a RV repair center. They said it was either the idler or altenator. They replaced one belt, the serpentine for the altenator and it worked fine. All my power came back. Now, two days later, the squeeking is back and I think it is the other main belt but not sure. The battery gets drained down on all three units. I too have the ford f460 in a coachmen santara, 1997. Could it just be the main belt now or should I be concerned about a more expensive option of replacing the altenator?

Thanks Bubba...I just want to make sure I have done everything in order to make that stop...I guess I can look for those disconnects...probably the best thing. Thanks again
