HI,
I HAVE A 1977 MOTORHOME WITH A DODGE 440.AFTER I PARK IT FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS IT WON'T START.SEEMS LIKE THE CARB IS EMPTY AS I GET ONLY ABOUT 1/2 OF A PUMP SHOT THEN THE FUEL BOWL IS EMPTY.
If you prime it or use starting fluid will it start OK?
These carbs sit in a sort of a doghouse and this can cause the fuel in the carb to get hot enough in some cases to boil the fuel out of the carb and it winds up in the intake, flooding the engine. If this happens when you are on the road, you may stop for fuel and cannot start again until the engine cools down. If you don't restart, the fuel can boil out anyway.
I had a small Class A with a Dodge 318 which would do this, I finally installed a 12 volt blower to pull outside air and send it through a hose to the base of the carb. Turn blower on before stopping and leave on until restarting...worked OK.
Don't know if this will help, but the heat in the box can cause problems with carb engines.
I had the same problem with my 1977 440 Dodge. I would have to turn the starter over for about 20 seconds or more to prime the carb. I finally fixed it by installing a Carter electric fuel pump purchased thru Summit racing for about 55 dollars. It is the low pressure 5 psi unit that delivers about 70 gallons per hour. Now I turn on the accessory key it primes the carb I then pump the gas 8 times and if fires right up. Be sure to install a heat shield if the new pump is close to the exhaust pipe. I used a thick cookie sheet and then wrapped the fuel line in aluminum foil. The power to the pump will need its own wire with a 4-5 amp fuse for safety.
