Screaming engine, belt, alternator, pulley or something else, besides me.
76 Winnebago Brave, 44 Chrysler engine. Runs great.
Recently, it screams. I thought it was the power steering, but the fluid is full, and when I turn the wheels far, that has a different screaming sound.
I sprayed some WD40 on the belts while bumping the engine. No help.
It does it for awhile, 5 minutes or so, after I start it, then, sometimes, it quits for awhile, but starts back up again, even while I'm driving, within minutes.
An autozone helper suggested it might be the alternator, or a pulley.
How can I determine if it is either?
Or, what other suggestions can I get... for the screaming.
Start by taking the belt off and start the engine(don't let it run). See if the sound is still there. If gone start with a new belt. You prob. need one anyway since the WD40. Clean the WD off the pulleys, before a new belt. Don't put WD on the new belt, use a belt dressing if you think you need something on there, but a new belt shouldn't need it. If poss. put a belt on just what you think may be the problem and start up to see.
Linda, if it is the alternater, it always goes to full charge right away to replace the voltage used to start the rig. At full charge it will put an extra drag on the belt. Can you check your charge guage or lite while the screaming is happening? Is the needle pinned? How old is the battery? how loose is the belt? Autozone has all the test equiptment if needed. And, like Rich said, NO WD40.
Linda, B/4 removing belts be sure that each accessory (alternator, A/C, air vpump, etc.) is actually turning over or rotating. It could be a frozen pulley bearing on one of the accessories. When one freezes or begins ot freeze up, the noise will come and go as you described. If you have already replaced the belt and the noise continues, you have confirmed a frozen pulley on one of the accessories and will need to buy another belt. Check the lower mounted to the ground accessories; they usually get the roughest environment. Good Luck.
