I have just bought a 1984 winnebago chieftain 26 with a 454. I need to know the standard operating temps. While driving on highway the temp is between 190 and 195.
At idle the temp cimbs over 210+. I can't find this info anywhere. At what temp should I get concered.
Any help wood be great.I'm new to the Rv world
Possibly change the thermostat-and more than likely have the radiator cleaned and replace the fan clutch--"DO NOT buy cheap off brand one-get GM replacement

Jim, I have the same year coach holiday rambler 33'and the same situation. I have a new 454 carb type engine at 65mph the temp is 190* as soon as I slow down the fan clutch will engage and start to assist. If I stop for gas the temp will top 230* and it will not start until cooled. GM told me that this engine came with a 190 t-stat. Suitable for normal driving only!!
My engine runs at 2800rpm @65mph the engine oil temp is about 30*hotter. When I slow down at a stop light the fan does not move enough air through the rad to properly cool the engine. To solve your problem change the t-stat to 160* GM recommends for high speed engines (motorhomes)....
Had a ruptured engine hose and a cut alternator fan belt on my trip in a 1984 Elandan with chevy 454 engine. Engine overheated and stopped. The mechanic thinks the top gasket will be replaced and demands $1400. Any ideas about the average cost of such repairs and what else should I do in connection to this problem. I am new to rving. I still plan along trip on this RV.
Thanks, Keluo.
