My update on this post. I read about that Reluctor Ring thing in a Hayes manual, and I think the manual is all wet. Do need a puller to remove the crank gear. Any comments appreciated. Thanks
I'm a 74-year-old retired mechanic and haven't worked on a late model 454 in many years, but if you are in the process of changing the timing chain, I'd recommend dropping by a speed shop to pick up an offset key so that when you go back together, you can advance the camshaft timing 4 degrees. You'll notice a big change in the torque curve, because you will be getting the intake valves closed quicker, and on my own motorhome, I also saw a very slight increase in gas mileage. It shouldn't affect emissions at all.
