Rotten egg or sulphur smell Marshall 6-19-07
This past weekend I started having a "rotten egg or sulphur smell" coming through the engine a/c dash vents on my motorhome. I read in an issue of Motorhome magazine that it could be caused either by my catalytic converter or possibly by the gasoline, which has some sulphur in it, however, this article was saying the smell was on the outside of the motorhome.....mine is on the inside. Any one have ideas or suggestions or had this problem before ?

Hi Rich in VA: Thanks for the reply, however, I failed to say in my first post that the smell is coming in through the engine dash a/c vents. Some suggestions have been to check the engine area for a dead animal....one Chevy dealer suggested it may be the last gas I got with too much sulphur in it (don't know how it could get in thru the dash vents). I'll be checking the engine area today and burn some of the gas off before I refill. When I first smelled it I was following a friend in his RV and I thought he had a leaking black water tank....that's what it smelled like. Several years ago I did have the problem with the rotten egg odor in the hot water heater.

Hello Marshall;
rotten egg smell inside is probably from "old" stagnant water that sat in Water heater. Once you started to use it you smell it-I suggest (1)run it all out (2) drain the water heater-turn pump off,--outside bottom drain-open the relief valve too.(3) when you put water back in rv---add 4 Oz. bleach-pour it in hose before hooking hose to rv--easier way--add 5-10 gallons---let it sit in tank 1 hr. then turn pump on run it through all spigots--shower too
plunge all drains---add water back into drains-so smell doesn't come back into rv-from tanks.

Afternoon Marshall;
next item could be your overcharging the batteries.
the acid in lead acid batteries is sulfuric acid----
another possibility

Thanks Rich....I thought the same thing about the batteries, however, all three are under the entrance stairs which is a distance from the engine compartment.
I started the coach up today and let the engine a/c run for a while and no odor. We'll be taking a short day trip next week for service and we'll see what happens then.

Well, I finally found out what was causing the odor....apparently, it was my last gas fill up...too much sulphur.
I have now filled up again at a different location and now no foul odor.

I've had several responses from other RV'ers suggesting the gas I last filled up with could have too much sulphur since it is an additive to gasoline.
Going to get the tank low and then re-fill at a different station.

Re: sour ammonia-like smell from shower drain r sellars 2-4-08
We have a smell coming from our shower and sink drain that smells sour or like ammonia. Does anyone know what causes this?

Thanks
