1996 intruder 460 ford. After two hours hwy running, engine will fail at idle and will not start until one hour cool down. After one hour, engine will start but mis-fires. Seems to run ok once I get up to hwy speed, but will continue failing at idle speed. Can cool off one day and engine runs fine at idle until after two hours driving, then same problem.
First off have a pressure check on the fuel system and it might be a stopped up filter too.
but lots of fords have had bad fuel pumps.
always keep fuel around 1/4 tank-the fuel keeps the pump cooler and so it wont overheat and burn out.
Tks Richard. It is at the shop right now and I will inform them to check that. Before checking, they seem to think it has something to do with a fuel regulator (silver box) that is heating up and telling the engine it needs more fuel. During Idle this will cause the engine to fail, but at hwy speed it will run. I do know when trying to start the engine right after failure, I notice a gas ordor like it was flooding if it had a carb on it. I hope they can fix, as it is a problem with engine stopping two hours after I leave home and normally no place to pull off.
