I purchased a rebuilt by a quality shop, chevy 400,with 400 heads, steam holes drilled, it has an edlebrock performer manifold, edlebrock 1406 carb, mild cam, in a corvette, using stock corvette exhaust, pcv is the only smog, had to remove thermostat, still wants to run hot 230 degrees, unless ambient temp is below 80 F. I also installed a summit aluminum radiator 2 core, 1 inch tubing and 2500 cfm auxillary fan. The engine runs good except for the temp on warm to hot days, any suggestions as to what else can be done to rid the engine of heat?
Anybody have problems with the Chevy 400 like they do with the chevy 454?
If memory serves me right, there were two 400 ci engines, one was a pumped-up small block, and the other a down-sized big block. Of the two, the later was the better engine.
If you run a 4 core rad it won't over heat thats what all factory 400's came with do not use the 2 and 3 core's that came with a 350 done tryed it 400 is a real good eng we have had 3 different ones that had 300,000 miles on them never apart 350 sure won't last that long and don't make the power in stock form
I have a 79 chevy pick-up i have changed the spark plugs, wires, and electronic module it still wil not start and its getting fuel what can be wrong plz help me
Have a 400 SBC in my 1981 Camaro. Parked the car over the winter and now the car won't fire at all. Pulled the #1 spark plug out to check for spark and there is. Tried dumping a little gas in the carb. thinking maybe it was a fuel pump thing but the car didn't even try to fire.

The 400 was an upsized small block. Ther were 396 and 402 inch big block chevies. The 400 had siamesed cylinders, that is, no water jacket between them. Easier to overheat than a 350. A 400 crank in a 350 block is the best of both worlds. 383 inches.
Got a 400 in a 'c' class running a little rough but still gets about 11.2 mpg....somebody said check a lifter and /or check the cam...have only 56000 miles +.....22' that weighs in at 13100 lbs. across the scale fully loaded
I have a 400 small block in my 81 too!! What type of heads and cam do you ahve in yours? My motor is bored 60 over. Just wondering what type of equipment youare running in your engine
I PUT A 400 ENGINE BIG BLOCK ENGINE IN A 1981 EL CAMINO AND I AM HAVING A HARD TIME FIXING IT UP BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE ENGINE NORMALLY BELONGS TO AND CANNOT FIND THE ENGINE CODE THAT BELONGS TO IT WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT???
