Casionaly when starting the engine it makes a sound as if there is a dead spot on the flywheel (grinding noise).
has anyone else experienced that ?
Did it turn out to be the flywheel or the starter gear ?
What was the fix ? THERE COULD BE SEVERAL DIFFERENT PROBLEMS WITH THE STARTER PROBLEM......FIRST, THE STARTER ITSELF COULD NEED TO BE RE-AJUSTED WITH SHIMS TO BE ALIGNED CORRECTLY...SECOND, THERE COULD BE A DAMAGED FLYEHEEL AS WHERE THE TEETH HAVE BEEN BROKEN AT 1 SPOT OR ANOTHER...I HAVE CHANGED THE FLYWHEEL MYSELF AND IT IS A BIT OF A JOB....YOU CAN FIND THE PROBLEM BY TAKING DOWN THE TRANSMISSION COVER AND WATCH THE TEETH.....GOOD LUCK....

It sounds as if your ring gear is "milled".When an engine that has accumulated some miles is shut off, it will usually come to rest in the same one or two spots. Therefore, the starter drive gear will be engaging the ring gear on the same teeth the majority of the time. In the Delco starter, as in most all starters, the drive gear is case hardened, while the ring gear is soft, so any wear occurs there. The design of the starter, when the key is turned, feeds a small amount of current to the starting motor to cause the drive gear to revolve slowly as the solenoid pulls it into engagement with the ring gear. At the end of the solenoid's stroke, when the drive gear should be fully engaged with the ring gear, the starter motor's main contacts are closed and full battery current is fed to the armature, providing the torque to crank the engine over. As stated in another post, you can drop the inspection cover and pry the engine around via the ring gear teeth while you check them for both damage and depth of tooth contact. If contact is too shallow, (wear marks near the top of the teeth), then, if present, remove a shim that is between the mounting pads and the engine. If the ring gear is badly "milled", the fix is to replace it. If not too badly milled, I'd suggest that you pull the starter and replace the solenoid, as it may be causing the main current to be fed to the armature before the drive gear is fully engaged. Good luck, may the fix be the least expensive.
