My 85 'Winnebego Chieftan shutters like there is a fuel line problem under high loads (over 60 mph or up hills) and I am looking for a quick fix. I also need a reference for a good mechanic in the San Francisco Bay Area
How old are the plugs and wires? A weak ignition will stumble under a load. The 454 makes a lot of heat which is hard on wires, particularly after shut down.

Check your fuel filter. Can be blocked. Could cause the type ploblem you are experiencing.

I had a similar problem in my '85 Elandan when running on the main gas tank (rear). cured it by installing an additional (in line) electric fuel pump.
Problem with 454 in 1988 Dolphin motor home. Upon turning off ignition, an explosion often occurs in the exhaust system. Also, when pressing the gas pedal almost to the floor, during upgrade, the engine sounds like it is gasping for air and starts losing power. The plugs, plug wires, rotor, and cap, were recently replaced by a brake muffler shop. Further, often the ignition switch will not stop the engine, and it is necessary to pull out the headlight switch to make the engine stop. I know this sounds bizarre. Further, the engine sounds like it is diseling after turning off the ignition switch.
