Backfiring and black smoke - 454 91 Carb 4BL Jon G. 9-30-06
My 1991 Rexhall-Airex on Chev P30 chasis with 454 4-barrell carb. Has started giving black smoke on acceleration, and some backfiring when let off accel at in-town speeds. Cold running is fine. Ideas, thoughts?

If it is a 91,454 it may be TBI fuel injection. If so check the coolant temp. sensor and check the thermostat, see if the temp gauge goes up around 190 degrees.A cool engine or a low signal to the ECM will cause it to run rich after about 3 min. This may cause black smoke and loading up with to much fuel. Good Luck MIKE
