Engine RPM's Mark 9-8-01
I have a 1986 austin class c thats 23'. it has a chevy 350 with 410 rearend. it sure runs good but it sounds like its going to come through the cowling when i am going up a hill or get much over 60 mph.
i put a tach on just to see where im at- and it never goes above 4000 rpm. is this acceptable? for how long? if not how high should i let it go.i am usally pulling a trailer with 6 atv's, through mountain grades. i know that i dont have enough motor, but its what i got!
thanks

If you take the stroke of the 350,(3.48"), double it,(3.48" X2= 6.96"), you'll have the piston travel per revolution. Take a conservative cps, (critical piston speed), of 2,800 feet per minute, multiply that by 12 to get inches, (33,600") divide that by 6.96" to get 4,827 RPM . A CPS of 3200 feet per minute can be used, the pistons can take that, would yield 5,517 RPM. The sb Chevrolet is a screamer, due to it's short stroke.
