I have a 1990 FLair with a F.I. 460 Ford. On a long hill or when the engine get a little hot, it will stutter, make sound like small backfires and lose power. It will only do this under load and hot. When it cools off it stops. I have checked fuel pressure, replaced plug wires etc and throtle possition sensor. The engine has 44k on it.
I agree, you have a fuel problem. The backfiring noise you hear is caused by a leaning out condition. Those Ford fuel pumps are not most reliable. More than likely this is your trouble, although sometimes clogged fuel filters will cause this same problem. You said you checked fuel pressure? Remember, fuel pressure must be checked with the engine under load, checking it at idle is essentially meaningless.
What was the fuel pressure? More important, what was/is it when this sputtering is occuring? Fuel pressure isn't the most important thing here. You have described the senerio of a weak ford fuel pump. They will provide enough fuel to run, but not enough fuel volume to return to the tank from the fuel pressure regulator, and, do, vapor lock.
How do you drive...by mileage not that much..Might help giving it a good run...if you dont drive above 60 use 2nd gear for about 10mi. May be getting carbon buil up on valves or cyl heads??????

Mine did this and I ended up replacing the coil. But that was on an '83 chassis with carburetor. I don't know if your coil is similar to mine. Mine looks like the old fashioned oil-filled coil, two primary terminals, center secondary terminal for spark lead to center of distributor cap. Hope this helps. God Bless,jd

One of my EGR check valves went bad and it burned through the rubber hose right near the carburetor. Every 1000 miles or so the Air filter would plug and it wouldn't run right. It was really hard to detect because of the close quarters and location. Inspect that EGR system inch by inch just in case you are experiencing something similar.
