New Carb for 1977 Dodge 440 Question Chuck 8-11-06
I have a 6321SA thermo quad carb on my
1977 Dodge 440 Class A motorhome.
I can get either a :
rebuilt Holley # 64-1049/64-2049 or
rebuilt thermo quad

for about $200 each.

Does anyone know which is better,
or, are they about the same ?

Also, I have been told my 6321SA is a Federal carb, but I live in California.
I can have a Federal carb if it is original equipment.

Does anyone know how I can tell if my motorhome is a Federal or California
vehicle ?

Thanks ! Chuck from Sacramento

I have found a California identification
decal on the valve cover.

I had same problem with my 440!! Watch out for the rebuilt carbs from automotive chains stores. I gave up and went to a junk yard.

I managed to find an old thermoquad for $10. Even though it was a little different than my carb I was able to fix mine and it now runs good, a lot better. I agree, I was not certain if the auto parts stores were selling the correct carb. I saved a lot of money. I have heard the old thermoquad is a decent carb. It has big secondaries for more power.

Forget that thremoquad. They never worked well. a 10 dollar carb will give you lots of trouble. Try the Edelbrock replacement.

A $10 thermoquad? they are awesome, the best, as long as the plastic body isn't warped, and as long as you can tune it. some people call it thermobog.the secondaries on them are huge compared to the primaries (throttle blades) edelbrocks 750 cfm carb is a good choice, they also sell a kit for tuning, with metering rods and springs.good for fixing lean out, which will burn valves, or rich condition, which will rot you exhaust and empty your wallet
