440 dodge with headers keeps eating starters, anyway to get a heavy duty starter?
Mark, I have a 440 with headers and my starter is okay. The thing you must do is go to Chrysler and ask for a heat shield kit. This will correct your problem and probably be cheaper than a new starter.
I'm sure there is, but is there a way to build a heat shield over the starter, and make sure there are no exhaust leaks near starter
The original starters for the 413 and 440 were larger, (longer) units and developed a higher horsepower output, (i.4 HP comes to mind). They are now somewhat hard to find, the lower HP starter for the small blocks is what is being sold for all ChryCo engines. If you know of a friendly, knowlegeable parts person, he might be able to help you locate an original, ( I once spent several hours going through a couple of supplier's stock, opening and closing boxes of starters, but I found three of these larger units).
