Hi
I had my RV looked over at a local Ford Dealership and on the ride home the Check Engine light came on for about 5 minutes. The engine seemed to be running fine. It didn't miss or act funny in any way. My RV is a Ford E350 1993. We are about to go on a long trip and I'm a bit concerned. Can you help?
Thanks Al
The 'check eng. light ' came on and I took it to a local Auto Zone where they hooked up a small computer.
The verdict - # P1153; Bank 2 fuel control shifted lean.
Can you tell me a little bit more about this? is it a sensor that needs to be replaced or simply doing an adjustment. Can I do this or have to take it to a repair place?
Your help will be greatelly appreciated.
Paul
I wouldn't worry about the light. The computer "thought" it had detectected a problem in one of the circuits or components of the engine management system. When it rechecked, the problem had gone and did not reappear. If a problem that persists is detected, the computer will set a "hard" code in it's memory and turn on and keep on the "Check Engine" light until the code is erased after repairs are made.
Cheap insurance....Find any garage with a scantool and have it scanned. The code should remain in memory until the vehicle is started 50 times or the battery is disconnected. Nobody wants to get 50 or 100 miles into a 3000 mile trip and the stupid lite comes on.....worrying....looking for a garage on the road.....worrying...or even worse...BREAKING DOWN !!!
Don't mean to argue with you Joe, but as a state-licensed engine/emission technician,I know transient codes are not really causes for concern, and are not portents of eminent beakdowns. It's when you get repeated "check engine" light operation or when it comes on and stays on, that you need to have your OBD interfaced with a scan tool, and if your vehicle has OBD II---early 90's onward---it's going to be costly.
I have a 1996 Honda Passport. The check engine light will not come on and I checked the fuse but it was in great condition. I had to get an emission test for my car and they said that in order to pass the inspection I had to have my check engine light come on when the car started. I then took my car to a auto shop where they use their computer sensor on my care and replaced the sensory malfunction? (I really dont know what they replaced. Whats wrong with my check engine light and why wont it come on. All the other light come on when the car cranks up except the check engine light.
We do state inspections, and it has been my experience that usually the light on condition returns. We do work right off an Interstate highway and we scan 10 to 15 vehicles a day. A lot of these people said "well, the light came on once in a while but I ignored it. Scanning is cheap. It costs usually from $15 to $25 to scan a vehicle provided it was manufactured after 1983.
As we say in the trade re: "Check Engine" light, "If it comes on once, that's an occurance", if it comes on twice, that's a fluke, and if it comes on three times, that's a pattern".
