I've got a '94 class C with a Ford 460. Recently the belts have started squeaking when its cold, and generally the squeak goes away after it warms up.
I've never worked on serpentine belts before, is it easy to adjust and replace these, or is there some info online somewhere about servicing Ford 460 belts?
I've got brand new belts on my 460 and they still squeak when cold. Belt dressing last 2 minutes for me. I use Armor All. It seems to last a few months.
Replacing them is no big deal, if you're mechanically inclined. I replaced mine in 10 minutes and 5 of that was taking off and putting on the air cleaner.
Sometimes they just get noisy. We go through this with my daughter's TBird and occasionally spray a little Belt Dressing on it. Stays quiet for several weeks. Squeaks more if weather is damp. New belt did not help. Still, if you aren't sure how long this belt's been on there, I'd suggest you replace it. Be sure you have a diagram for how to put it back! But you still may end up with a squeaker and have to "dress" it. God Bless, jd
I have a squeking belt story too. Mine was a 93 F150 with a 5.8 liter. Over a period of three or four years I lived with a squeking belt. I sprayed it with everything, changed the belt, and at one time had all the hoses and belt replaced along with the belt tensioner. None of this cured it.
Well, I finally got fed up and decided I would replace everything with genuine Ford parts so I replaced the belt, tensioner, and even the vacuum smog pump. I replaced everything but the power steering pump and the A/C compressor. Still squeeked.
I finally traded it in on another Ford with the 5.4 liter. If this one starts to squeek I'm trading for a Chevy.
Sure its belt squeeking and not a vacuum leak. I had that for awhile with Ford and it would go away, found one of my vacuum plugs had gotten loose, when engine heated up it would seat. Go through all vacuum hoses and make sure they are all seated. Mine was one of the multi plugs and top had tipped back.
I've got a sqeaking problem on my 96 460 class A also. Exactly which vacuum hoses did you say you had a problem with? I've checked mine and have not found a loose one yet.
