I am looking to buy a 26' Class C motorhome (1984). It as only 40,000 miles. It as a 350 for motor and i am wondering if it's strong enough to go up hill pulling a 2000pds boat.Any opinion ? Is there a very big difference vs. 454. Would i get bettter milleage with a 350 or with a 454. Tks
Probubly your cheapest, quickest, and maybe best solution would be to go with a 'GEAR-VENDORS' over/under drive. Give them a call at 1-800-999-9555. The gear splitter allowes you to downshift or upshift using half gears. I'm not a vendor of Gear Vendors, just a confirmed user. I use them in my rase cars. Good luck...David
Depends on gearing, I had 350 in a 73 22 class A and had no probs. And depends what kind of hills, but 454 would have an advantage. Pulling a lot of hills, make sure of trans cooler, and or oil coolers.

I have a 34 ft. Bounder with a 454 in it that I tow a Chevy, Cavilier with and it handles the hill very well. I owned a 25 ft. class C with a Chevy 400 before the Bounder and I like the 454 much better. The 454 is much better on the hills and my gas milage is even slightly better. I also had a vapor locking problem with the 400 which I no longer have with the 454. I am looking to buy a 26' Class C motorhome (1984). It as only 40,000 miles. If you're thinking of pulling anything at all you really need the torque that the 454 is going to offer over the 350. Myself, I wouldn't own a vehicle that large with a SBC as they just don't have the torque required for a motorhome application. No matter how close they seem in HP, the torque makes all the difference. I pull a 3200 pound Jeep behind my 34' Class A with a fuel injected 454 and sometimes I wish I had more. Gas milage will not be noticably different with the 454 vs 350 due to the fact that the 350 will be completly overworked when pulling a trailor. In fact, often the larger motor will get BETTER gas milage. Save yourself the headache and look for a used motorhome with a larger motor.
