My 1989 tioga, 460 ford is experiencing powerloss. it seems as if a govenor has been put on motor. it wont go faster than 50mph. could this be the catylytic converter? as i accelerate there is a loud hissing from the right side of the motor.where to start diagnosis. it seems to run fine until there is a demand for power.
Usually with cat conv...there will be overheat also. Have someone rev enging and see if there is free flow out of exhaust with no hissing, could have partial blockage. Or Hissing could be vacuum leak somewhere

I have the same year engine in my RV. Had power problems for years. One time it was a bad Catalytic Conv. Changed it and muffler out and worked fine until last summer. Had problem exactly like you described. Ford shop discovered a bad primary fuel pump(yes, the one in the tank!) I had read articles in the past that thisFord fuel pump was a problem that Ford corrected in 95.

I used to transfer cube vans (Class C chassis). Occasionally we'd get a "pregnant muffler" where rust would clog the passages and govern the truck. In one case, and it was a Ford, there was a screen in the end of the tailpipe and it was clogged with rust out of the rest of the system.
I'm told we can use a big shop vac to test components for flow. Haven't tried it but makes sense. That, of course means we have a way to separate the components to test individually.
God Bless, jd
