We are having some sort of charging system problem that has stumped us and our mechanic. Our charging system will not keep our batteries charged. It appears that the charging system is dead. We've replaced both batteries, the alternator & voltage regulator (twice), and replaced associated wires. Still the system is not charging. Any ideas?
OK this one bothers me. Virtually all retail parts shops will bench test regulators, alternators and batteries at no charge at the counter. Very rarely will a regulator pass this test and fail in the real world. A battery or alternator simply will not pass the bench test and not work when installed. (unless damaged etc) So the question is are the parts correct for the application? Anyway, if the battery does not charge when the engine runs that should be easy to trace. Does it go dead sitting? How long does it Take? Either way easy to trace and a battery disconect will correct this if its a small draw. What it comes down to is the diagnoses has been botched. I have got my self into this kind of mess and had to talk to another tech to think straight and start diagnoeses over again. I am guessing you have a bad conection or broken cable/wire that is the root cause of your issue, but then it could easily be a bad or disconected ground. Good Luck
Hmm, 2 batteries? Are you using an isolator? Is one battery for the Home or are both used for starting? Bad isolator or wired wrong could be the problem. I have a '78 Beaver also, gave up on all the problems and re-wired the whole engine compartment. No problems since. Charges evenly at idle! Bubba is right on the grounds, ck. all of them, add/replace any with weak connectors. Good luck with her!
I HAVE A 1978 DODGE 440 ITASCO MOTORHOME THAT I RECENTLY PURCHASED. I'M GOING OVER THE ENTIRE UNIT, TUNE UP AND FLUID CHANGES AND SUCH,JUST GIVING IT SOME MUCH NEEDED TLC, WHEN I DISCOVERED THAT THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR ON THE FIREWALL HAD BEEN LEAKING THAT EPOXY FILLER THAT THEY USE ON THE BACK SIDE TO SEAL THE UNIT.I DOUBLE CHECKED THE AMP GUAGE TO SEE IF IT WAS CHARGING PROPERLY AND IT WAS.BUT, BECAUSE I'M A LITTLE LEARY ABOUT THAT FAILING WHILE ON THE ROAD, I DECIDED TO CHANGE IT OUT AND HANG ON TO THE OLD ONE AS A SPARE. I PUT THE NEW V-REG ON AND NOW IT'S NOT CHARGING. PUT THE OLD ONE BACK ON, IT WORKS. GOT ANOTHER, THINKING IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A DEFECTIVE UNIT AND THE SECOND ONE WILL NOT CHARGE.THEY SAY THIRD TIME THE CHARGE,BUT I'M WANDERING WHAT IS THE DEAL, 2 DEFECTIVE V-REG. HIGHLY UNLIKELY BUT POSIBLE I SUPPOSE. THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE BOX STATED NOT TO POLORIZE V-REG. CAN ANYONE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS AND EDUCATE ME. THANKS IN ADVANCE,JEFF
