I have an 88 Minnie Winnie with Ford 460/4bbl, 68K miles. I need more power to pull a horse trailer with it. Should I do some performance mods (if so which) or swap engines putting in a diesel? For performance mods I was thinking headers, dual exhaust with low restriction mufflers, maybe a performance carb and performance ignition system. But I'm not experienced enough to choose the parts yet. If I went with a diesel I'd buy a donor vehicle like a diesel ambulance and hire a shop to do the swap.
Finally, it has a head gasket leak so I can feel and hear exhaust coming out at the rear of the right side head. So I presume I need a new gasket at least. What else should I do while the heads are off?
If you can hear a leak from the head gasket the engine as whole is done like dinner. It more likly has a cracked manifold or blown manifold gasket. As to diesel talk to a couple shops and find out how much a swap would cost completed. I think you could buy a mini wini with the big diesel for what you would invest. This is why most engine swaps are done in the "back yard". The 460 could get something like an Edelbrock performance package http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/power_package/performer_power_packages.shtml has neet stuff that would probably double or tripple your output. Good Luck
