I've read through the archives and couldn't find any answers. 1984 Winnie 30ft.
Altenator belt squeaks like crazy, need to replace.
P30 chassis and 454. Which is best method? Remove grill and radiator or has anyone done it from the top? Or are the belts accessable from below? Any tricks, suggestions? Also I am thinking of disconnecting A/C compressor belt to improve milage and lessen failures, is this ok to do?
Regardless of make and model, the belt change is a real pain in the... It can normally be done by working from top and the bottom and if you have a handy freind that works on his own car that can help, it makes it easier. If the AC works the amount of fuel and trouble you save by removing the belt is tiny and a lot of these chassis use that belt as a second fan drive belt. a good back up that just could save a lot of pain some day on the side of the road. Good Luck
We used to have one of those rigs and I did the belt change myself without removing anything. It was a REAL PAIN, but an experienced backyard mechanic should be able to pull it off. If you don't fit that description then find a friend who does. You will also need a full assortment of wrenches. I also replaced the alternator. With those you have to take the pulley of your old one as the pulley on the replacement one will likely have the wrong number of grooves in it.
It was a struggle getting the bonnet up but I changed the belt as it was lose without having to move any other parts
this is a winnebago minnie winne 1979
I have a 86 itasca p-30 with a 454,all the belts can be done from the top and bottom without removing anything but the engine cover, i unbolted the a/c compressor and moved aside to get at the power steering belt its worth the extra time.
I have an 84 32ft winnie and I did change the belts to no avail, however after much trial error and more reading I found out that Gates belts work best as their taper matches that of the pulleys better than any other available in CANADA anyway I also found out if you tighten the belts to between 55 and 70 lbs the screaming will go away. Especialy the alternator belt. All the best to you.Ray
