CONT. HAVE A MCI 7 WITH A 8V71 DETROIT,I HAVE FANS ON ALL RADS WITH EXTRA RAD ALSO.I HAVE CHECKED RADS,WATER PUMP TO MAKE THEY ARE IN GOOD COND.RAN BUS ABOUT 65 MILES AN HOUR FOR HOUR.TEMP WENT TO 220 AND STAY THERE,HAVE ABOUT FIVE GALLONS COOLANT WITH WATER.I HEARD SOME PEOPLE SAY 8V71S RUN THAT HOT, IS THIS TRUE
MCI 7 coaches had just larg enough rads for the 258 hp tune they came with and a manual trans, Add a automatic, tune it to make 318 hp and they become very prone to running hot. On the flat, in 80 F or less temps it should stay at or near 180 F. Increase the temp above 80 or add a hill and you are going to need to drop speed and gears. The 8V71 cools best running on the govener at low load. ***IMPORTANT*** this coach came from the factory with an overheat shut down system. This engine should shut itself off at 220 F. If it has been disabled it can allow an engine failure. Do not run this engine @ or above 220, ever. Too figure this out for repairs, Get it hot 200-210 and stop and walk around back. The return pipe from the rad should be cool enough to grab and hold onto, if not the rads are shot (the get coated on the inside with corosion). If it is the coolant is not going through the system quick enough. Stuck thermostats, water pump is not pumping corect, some other restriction in the cooling system. They go down the road nice with the 318 tune but the 258 hp tune will improve engine life and reduce driver stress level trying to keep it from over heating. Good Luck
