Hello,

I have a fuel injected 460 and want to change to a Carb.

Reason is the electronics are causing it to run so rich it won't start.

Does anyone know if this nis doable?

Need to locate idle air control valve not able to spot it

Did you pull any codes for this ?
Any check engine light on ?
If no codes suspect a mechanical problem.
With the codes you should get at least an 11 or a 111 meaning a pass.
If not then you have an electrical wiring problem not allowing you to talk to the computer.
Put a fuel pressure gauge on the schreider valve on the passenger side of the engine and check the fuel pressure.
Should be 30 psi at idle and near 40 psi running at a good clip.
Leave the gauge on overnight and check it in the morning, there should be at least over 20 psi in the fuel rail.
If not, then your injectors are leaking, probably from leaving old fuel in the tank and gumming up the system. Very easy to clean out.
If the injectors leak than you will get a very rich burn.
Pull the plugs and look at the exhaust, if they are covered in a fine black soot then it is definatly overfueling.
The Ford EEC-IV EFI system is very simple and robust. Usually alot of the problems are from chafed wiring not allowing the computer to control the system. Easy to check the sensors one by one with a simple analog meter.
The computers are rock solid good ol made in USA, not China.
For a good tutorial on the system checkout http://fordfuelinjection.com
If you persevere long enough you can track down the problem.
Get a good manual that shows the wiring in detail.
Parts are cheap and plentiful, except the wiring harness's, they a NLS from Ford.

Converting to a Carb. from FE is possible. I did it with a 1978 Cad. Seville. The FI was mfg. by Bendix and as the car grew older, Even the Cad. dealer didn't have a clue...except for changing parts until something worked!!!

The engine was same as an Olds 350 so I obtained an intake manifold and carb. from an olds, removed all the FI stuff, installed the Olds parts. Also, had to replace the elect. fuel pump as FI pump ran at 40psi, far too much for a carb.

You will have to work out details along the way (such as air cleaner). My conversion worked well, especially after the engine was fully warmed up.

The down side is Miles Per Gallon...expect a significent reduction!

Just my $.02 worth, good luck with the project.

John

I'm changing a carb 460 with a fi 460. I want to just put the carb on as cheap and easy as possible. The carb motor was in a 87 RV. The fi motor is out of a 89 van. The motor is already in the rv.I was hoping I could just get a new intake, put it in then the carb. I had a poor macinac put this together and it ran at half throtle. Then he went to jail,so i'm stuck with the problem. He installed the carb intake on the fi motor. Someone please help been waiting to go rving for 2 years.

Zekio, the idle air control valve is dead center on the air throttle body at the front of it.
The only way to spot it is to remove the air intake box and possibly the large 2 air intake hoses.
It is actually one of the easier parts to get at on the 460 motor in a Econoline van/C class.

Looking for a kit or something to change from carb to efi in a 1988 ford motor home with the 460 in it, what do i need to do that and is it possible

I have the same question, Is there any difference in the 460 blocks form 1987 to 1988. I know they went to EFI but would like to convert to Carbs. I understand you might have to change the heads & intake manifold but is that the only difference. is the block the same?

Where did you find the plenum riser? I've looked and can't find one

Converting the FI 460 over to carb is simple. Ford made all the parts for us. The late model 429 truck engine {F-600} came equipped with the same heads and lower intake as the 460 FI. However, it was topped with a Holley carb. The lower intake was the same as the FI unit with the exception of the injector holes not being drilled. In place of the intake snorkel, Ford installed a 5" tall plenum. That's all you need other than the duraspark ignition. I have one of these engines on the stand now using this configuration to go in a mid 70's highboy. I am currently fabricating adapter plates to allow the use of L&L headers with the FI heads in the early vehicle. This combination should render some impressive torque numbers when we dyno it next month.

Hi Jack, I have a 90 F250 with efi AND propane conversion. Will run on gas or propane. This vehicle has way too much stuff in the engine compartment. Is the conversion you described fairly straight forward? From the sound of your post it seems that I would just unplug the pcm at the firewall and go for it. I'm an experienced back yard mechanic, but I've never went backwards like this. I just want a very simple brute engine in this rig.....can you help? Really appreciate your time.
