Power Converter AC/DC Problem Paul Kocharhook 1-29-08
I have an older power converter from a pop-up that I want to install in my 1968 Apache Eagle tent trailer. Everything on the AC side works fine, but when I switch to DC using a combination fan/light, the light works but the fan runs at a very slow speed. If I plug the unit into my car cigarette lighter both work fine. This unit is not installed in the trailer yet, but on my work bench. Could this be a grounding problem or something else?

Thanks in Advance,
Paul Kocharhook

One thing you didn't say was if you were conected to a battery when you ran the fan. The converter needs to be conected to a battery to work corectly and long term. You need to test this in the folowing way: need to measure Output voltage disconected from the batteries(13.5 +). Then need to measure voltage conected to the battery. Measure the battery voltage first (should be over 12.4) Then conect converter, voltage should jump to 13.8 - 14.2. If we have seen these levels then measure voltage with the load conected (Fan/Light) and check voltage. Should not drop below 13.7 at rated output for the converter.

After turning off the batteries at the engine bay(12/24), and at the battery bank (12/24): the overhear console LED light on the A converter flickers (it flickers whether on/off); and the B LED stays on. When I run the gen set the A LED comes on (no flicker)! The B LED continues to stay on. I'm freaking out! Help! Bob

The vast majority of converters must have a battery to work correctly. Over long the term they will be damaged. It will also cause wierd operation of stuff Good Luck

Not connected to a battery, I thought the converter switched to DC when it was in tranformer mode? That's when the light works, but the fan doesn't.

We have the same issue. Today we hooked up the battery for the first time in our 1975 Layton, (we got it almost free - it's been sitting for 11 years) With the battery connected and NO other power to the trailer the converter kept kicking on, the power to the lights increased (lights got brighter) a coil in the converter glowed and then shut off again. It did this even with all the lights off and no other known power draw on the system. One suggestion was that the draw was too high - something is shorting out. Don't know if this is correct but the suggestion was to pull the fuses one by one ans see if it stops. At least the problem may be isolated that way. Love to hear any suggestions - we're still learning. I didn't even know the converted did this.
