Ive got a 1988 shasta class A. my problem is in order to get power to the dash of the motorhome you have to hit a momentary switch by side door enterance to get power to the dash to run the engine once you jump into the driverseat to start the engine you have to hold a battery switch until the rv starts. once its started you let go of the switch. my problem is after the engine is running and you turn any electrical switch on it shuts down everything including the engine.like someone flipped a switch. all it takes is turning on the turn signals..and instantly everything goes dead. the only way to keep power is to continually hold the battery switch located on the dash on. is this an isolator problem??please help?
Dave sounds like a ground problem to me.Is the engine battery up to full charge and has clean tight connections? I have seen problems just like what is happening with other circuits that turned out to be a bad ground. Voltage maybe feeding back from the house batteries that is being used to run the ign. circuit. When you turn something on it drops the voltage thru the load and the engine dies.Check the ground straps from the engine block to the frame and make sure the connections are clean.May also have a burned open fuseable link.Also check all fuses for any burned open.I have seen an open fuse act that way.Do you have a test probe with a light in the handle or a volt ohm meter to test with? I had the same exact problem with my 88 Shasta. It is the grounding strap. Once i replaced it didnt have any more problem. It should be located in the front under neath the right near the tire. ITs attached to the frame and goes to the oil pan screws. If not get a new one and find a place to attach from the frame to the motor. Only other thing it could be is the alternator. If the ground strap does not correct the problem. Have NAPA load test the alternator ( its free ).
