I have a 1988 ford ranger 2.3. the problem is i hook up the test scanner and get 21 24 67 52 87 but to get the tester to work i have to ground the plug to the fuel pump relay. i get 12v at top pin if i jump this pin to the one right below it the high voulne pump kick in but the intank pump will not. do i have a ground problem somewhere in the wiring harness?
OK, we all have the same ranger problem, does anyone have a solution?? Surely Ford has heard of this problem. Any Ford mechanics out there that can help? This truck is in really good condition, low miles, too good to give up on. Thanks for any info...
I am having trouble with my 88 ford ranger. I have changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button, fuel filters and the timing belt. All of these were checked by a repair station. It runs fine until it warms up. Then it starts bogging down at times and then comes out of it and runs fine for a while and then will do it again. I don't have much power up hill and am using an ungodly amount of gas.I have gone from over 20 mpg to under 10 mpg.I can also smell gas after I drive it. Got any ideas?
I am having the same problem so I checked my interia switch it was fine. My coil is good, my spark plugs, my timing is right, my fuel filter is good, and I am getting gas to my fuel filter and my gas line on top of the motor. It is fuel injected what could it be?
I have an 88 ford ranger it was running fine I parked it for the night and when I went to start it again it would only turn over if I remove the vacuun line from the intake manifold and squirt fuel in it will start but the only way I can keep it idleing is to leave the vacuum line off I have dual tanks so I can't see both punps quiting at the same time unless its electrical please help could it be the high presure pump has quit also I had just filled both of my tanks could there be a blockage
I have a 1988 ranger 2.9 v6, all new wires cap, rotor, sensors. Truck runs badly when timed, if timed 5 degree past TDC runs with a miss and very rich. Will not run at proper timing, black smock puffing out tail pipe, very simmilar details as other posting above, what could be the cause of this problem?
I would like to say first of all thanks for your help.My 1988 ranger will run perfect if I start it by spraying gas into the intake. After it starts it runs like a charm.Let the little bugger sit for a little bit and I have to spray it to start it.I would greatly thank you for what ever you can help me with. Thanks,Ricky
Hi! My name is marcos chaves, i have a ford ranger 87, 2.3,. Have problems with the fuel injection.. I change the 2 fuel bombs.. I have an 88 Ford Ranger 6 cyl. that sometimes after filling up, will quit running and will not start until after sitting for a few days. replaced fuel filter but did not help.
My 1996 ranger (2.3l) runs fine except that at random the fuel pump relay "shuts down". I used to be able to switch the relays and it would fire right up for another month or so but no it won't run two minutes. I have bought new relays to no avail. Now I have to wait 10-30 mins for it to crank and die again. Thanks
I have 2.9 v6 with fuel problems.
i have fuel up to fuel rail with good presure but i cant get in cylinder.got power to injectors.would any you know what i could try or check.
thanks Mike
Hi, guys,
Sorry Jamie, I'm not sure about your grounding problem but you should be able to read the wiring schematic and see where it is supposed to be grounded and go from there. I am not a Ford tech, just an old shade tree mech. Rich, have you checked to see if your fuel pressure regulator is holding pressure? I understand that if you take the return line off and plug it, you can then check the pressure and see if the regulator is dumping your pressure. The regulator is mounted at the rear of the fuel rail on the 5.0l engine and has a vacuum line on it. In addition to plugging the fuel return line, you can see if taking the vacuum line off does anything. Could be that it is dumping fuel pressure but the vacuum (or something else?)is telling it to. I don't know how that regulator works or what the vacuum line is for. I know my info is incomplete but it's a start.
Good luck,
Jerry
Hey whats up i have a problem... Im about ready to give up on this truck guys lol.. I have an 87 ford f-150 i have no where else to turn too... really, this is my problem... i crank but she dosnt kick... shell run with either but its like a second or two then she dies outt... its like my injectors arnt opening... i hadd a problem with my fuel pump not snapping on to prime the fuel rail... now its priming shutting off then restarting like i have a constant power to it.. This truck was jerry rigged so i have to say i have no switch off of the dual tanks... and i no longer have an inertia switch... so resetting that is out of the question.. the starting cylnder is bad i have a push button which snapps all the time and cuts out.. But my major problem is I have fuel coming to the fuel filter... and up to the rail.. it bulds pressure in the rain like 35 psi but its no constant... as soon as i loes pressure.. It just wont stay in the rail and the pump... keeps running.... any way the spark plugs are dry so im kinda stuck if any one could give me a hand let me know. Im sure i left alot out but i couldent even to start to tell what other problems this truck has
Hello, I have a '87 Ford Ranger. its been in the family for about 10 - 15 years. Any ways I got it from my dad after he got a 92 Ranger (with a lift and cromed out), I have the older ranger and I have a problem with it. I'm a 22 year old, and I'm mechanicly inclind and know alot about Ford Trucks, from 65 to 92 models, But I am having problems with geting fuel up to the RAIL, let alone into the cilinder, I replaced the in-line Pressure Pump because its the one that usaly goes out, and the pump relay, but not geting power to the pumps, starting to think that I need to replace the fuel pump harness, the hole thing to see if that would fix the problem, I just need to know if this could be a fix for the problems and if it would get it running, Please I need addvice on my Ranger Problems. P.S. I'm selling it for about 2K as is, 3K RUNNING. Xaeros
Have 1988 ford ranger, won't start. It's 2.3L, manual transmission. Have replaced both fuel pumps, pressure regulator, coil and ingnition modualar. Still won't start.
I have the same exact problem with mine. i dont know what to do. if i jump a hot wire to the pink wire, the pump will kick on. i traced the wires and i cant find where its bad at. please help.
I have an 88' ranger. my problem is that it starts and idles fine till it gets warmed up, then it starts spitting and sputtering, if you drop it in gear it dies, its getting fuel to the rail and the injectors have power, what could be wrong?
Where in hell is the fuel line connect to the injector on the motor. where are the fiting between the gas line and the motor because i have to drain the fuel line

I have the same problem. i replaced the fuel filter and that didnt do anything. so i thought the exhaust might be clauged. took it off ran it straight from the manifold, still did it. i am going to try replacing the plugs and throwin some fuel injector cleaner down the tank. this all started happening after i punched the throttle to the floor at my gf's house and it did that when i was going down the road. so im thinkin it has something to do with the injectors.
My fuel pump relay making a buzzing sound,as long as the relay buzzing, my truck will not srart up,when it stop then it will srart up and run good.I change all three or the relats, still buzzing, so I change the fuel pump and then replaced the fuel pressure valve. the relay still buzzing, at lease two of them.My truck still will not crank, can you help me.Thank, norman
.
How do you test the external fuel pump on a 1988 2.9 litre v-6 ford ranger to see if it good or not, it kicks on but don!t feel it is delivering the proper pressure to the throttle body it needs! Thanks greg
I have a 1987 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab truck that has about 160,000 miles on this engine. I replaced the computer control unit last year about this time for a similar problem.
The truck starts with no problems and runs really well for approximately 4 miles. At that time it begins to stumble, stutter, and shake and will emit black smoke from the exhaust. If I accelerate in a moderate or hard fashion it will pick up and run okay, but if I let off the accelerator it will go back to the original problem.
If I am on an interstate and use my speed control it will alternate between running fine, cutting-out, picking back up and running fine and then repeat the pattern as long as I let it remain in speed control. It has not completely cut off except when I have to stop at a stop sign or traffic light or the like.
With similar problems in the past I've had it tune up and it worked or a while. I have had the oxygen sensor replaced and it worked for a while. I have also been told that it could be a problem with the catalytic converter.
I have gone from getting around 20 mpg to less than 10 mpg.
M 1988 Ranger Picks it own time not to start, right now it does not start when i park under our tree and it rains. Turns over but i do not smell gas. This Ranger has 2 gastanks, well i thought it was the switch replaced.
Replaced Fuel Filter! Tore out Front gastank, no good anyway. Thought i had the problem licked, started great after that. Rained today, will not run!
HELP!
Flutterstrateded!
I have a 1988 ford ranger 6 cyl 2.9 4x4 the fuel pump in the tank seems to turn on when you turn the key but the other high presure pump located on the frame will not kick on i dont know if it is the pump or not, i know both pumps wher replaced 3 yrs ago but the truck has sat for the last two years. i tried to check if the pump was getting power with a volt meter and it registered between 0.2 and 0.6 is my problem electrical or do i just need a new pump ?? please help this is my only vehicle and i need it running asap!!!
For everyone who's having trouble starting their Rangers..Remove the fuel line from the injection rail and pump some fuel into a glass jar. Hold it up and check for water. Water is present when fuel is observed floating on the top. If this is the case your fuel take will have to be removed and flushed out, the leak found and repaired..
1988 ford ranger 2.9L no power going down to fuel pump and power going to the coil and i got a spark
but the fuel pumg(high preasure wont work so i got a new one and i honestly cant find the old one to replace it with i looked in the book its not where it says to be?? can you help?
My 1988 Ranger 2.3L won't start. I checked the TFI module. It checks out okay. It will crank and crank but not fire. I am getting spark. Even get a good odor of gas when I crank on it. I just came out one morning last week and it started to fire but then dumped and still hasn't started since. what could it be?
Have an 88' ranger 2.9L. my problem is that it starts and idles fine till it gets warmed up, then it starts spitting and sputtering and shooting really thick, tarry black smoke (not oil type smoke though) out the tailpipe, then it wants to die. Several new parts didn't help. 2 new O2 sensors, new Cats, new exhaust, EGR, etc. Please help.
I have replaced pump and relay have no power to pump but when i jump relay harness fuel pump turns on and truck starts what should i do.sorry its an 88 ranger 2.9l
I have an 87 bronco 2 with 2.9L. I have replaced both fuel pumps and the filter and still wont start. Its getting fire and I know its getting fuel thru the back pump. I havent checked the front yet. but i just replaced it so it should. can anyone help this is my only vehicle.. thanks
88 ranger 2.9 wont run. you can squirt starter fluid into manifiold and it runs. put on new fuel pump and filter. have pressurea at manifold. has fuel in both tanks.
I have a 1988 ford ranger I changed the tank and pump dis. cap rotor button mouldgal and plugs then the wires.they the wires popped off.I put them back on and now won't run the damm truck won't crank over now.
On the right inside fender well [the engine comparment] there are 2 relays. One of these controls voltage to the injectors. Relay may be bad or the pins are corroded. Pull relays and jumper across battery as per diagram on relay. Pins 1 & 2 are the coil. Check continuity between close or open contacts with an ohm meter. This is a common problem but the books don't show it. The relays also control spark to the coil.
Hi you have 2 realys one for the power but between the pump and the main relay u have a safety relay check is the breaker poped out of place it should be located on ur floor board under ur dash
Hi doug, have you checked the neutral safety switch on the clutch. If it is inoperable that means the circuit wont be complete to the starter relay essentially the car won't ''see'' that the clutch is depressed causing the car not to start.
Riding along fine engine shut off for a few seconds then caught up, went about 1/4 mile and it shut off, had 1/4 tank of gas, put a gallon of gas in it and it started and ran fine, filled up tank and drove about 20 miles and after getting off expressway it acted up, after shutting down and catching up several times it ran fine, have not checked anything other than filling up tank. Ben
Ok no spark but you do have power @ the coil. if you sure you have proper power @ the coil but no spark you need to change your ignition control module that is bolted to your distributor this fixed mine when I had the same issue
Check your interia switch, it should be under your carpet on the passenger side. Push button on top of switch. Wire colors are pink and the other is yellow.
MY 87 DID SAME THING WAS MY PRESSURE REGULATER AT BACK OF FUEL RAIL I PULLED THE VACUUM LINE AND GAS WAS DUMPING THRU IT STRAIGHT INTO THE INTAKE. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE WAS A CHEAP EASY FIX
I had an 88 that did that. The problem was the exhaust was restricted. It would run good then all of a sudden act like it couldn't move. Gas mileage was poor. Come to find out, the catalytic converter was blocking the exhaust gas. Also, when it had poor power, I noticed that if I drove it like that for a while, the exhaust manifold got cherry red. I ended up cutting the convertor off and it ran like a million dollars
Just fixed this same problem, strong odor of gas after you turn it off? No Power? Does it stall at stop lights?
Try replacing the Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator, at Autozone it was only 35.99 and it fixed my problem. I only know this cause i took it to a shop and they charged me 85 bucks to tell me that. After you replace the regulator you will need to replace the plugs because they are most likely fouled.
I have the same Ranger, and went through the same crap. First, check the fuel shut-off switch on the passenger floorboard. Make sure it is not trying to turn off. That was my prob. Second, on your fuel rail. touch the relief valve, make sure you have pressure. If you do have pressure, then it is in either your injectors, or your crank sensor is going bad.
I have an 88 ranger for some reason it was running on 3 cylinders. I have replaced plugs, wires and infectors however its still running like a vw bug. Its getting fire but still seems like its not getting fuel to those same three cylinders.
What are your suggestions??
We have a 1988 ford ranger 3.2 4cylinder truck. Truck running fine but would not pass Marta, so we had a compression check run at Napa, afterwards the truck will not idle and you have to pump the gas to keep it running. We replaced the plugs, plug wires, distributor, and coil. It still seems not to be getting gas so we replaced the frame fuel pump. Still same problem, HELP!!!!

Hi just bought my first truck and having same problems as paula.Ihave replaced both fuel pumps and filters, cap, rotor, cts, plugs, wires, ciol, ignition module, but the darn thing still dies after warming up. Any suggestions? PLEASE HELP!!!!
The car is hot when you turn it off, it rains and the moisture collects on the wires, Then when you try starting its firing outside the wires. You have Bad wires. Get some wire dry and spray on them, when you have time change them out.
