I have a 1988 Ford Ranger and it keeps cutting out which I just put a new fuel filter on it but doesnt cure the problem. Thinking it needs new sensors?
I have 170,000 miles on my truck and it runs fine, except I can't get the check engine light to go out. Changed the fuel filter and oxygen sensor last year, also tuned it up and ran a cleaner through the fuel system to clean the injectors etc.. Had Auto Zone plug their analyzer in it to check for code problems and it came back with only one bad code. It recommended changing the O2 sensor, MASS sensor, or possibly a clogged fuel injector. When the truck is warmed up it sometimes hesitates when stepping on the gas. What do you suggest?
TRUCK, STARTS EASY AND RUNS GOOD COLD, AFTER 2OR 3 MILES TRUCK STARTS TO LOSE POWER, AND WILL FINALLY WILL NOT PULL ITS SELF
NEW COIL NEW DIDTRUIBTOR, NEW PICK UP COIL, NEW IGNITION MODULE ETC ETC NOTHING HELPS
Son has the similar problems. new filter, new sensors, new coil, new plugs, checked module OK, After talking to some people and a little investigation on our part, found that this truck uses a 'fuel sediment tank' just before the pump under the driver side tucked into the U shaped frame section behind a protection plate tomorrow while he's at work Iam taking the tank off and either cleaning it or replacing it. I am pretty sure that no one has ever done it on this truck. If you have one of these sediment tanks that could be the problem. over the years of sediment build up in this small 2x3x3 container it is possible that the tank is not allowing fuel to pass. Iam even thinking of replacing it with another filter. that way the fuel is filtered before and after the elec. pump, (could save the pump) also tucked into the same U frame area. testing to make sure the fuel is not getting to the engine is easy while the engine is not starting place a tablespoon or two of gasoline on the air filter and try to start it. if it wants to start or does start and runs for 3 to 5 seconds. Then the spark is OK, compression must be good, and the only thing left is there is no fuel. Also had a EEC-IV error of 95 thats just a wire problem (error table says ground wire no good) so that should be easy.
Hope this helps
My 1988 Ford Ranger 2.6L V-6 loses power and RPM's when at cruising speed (not accelerating). When accelerating the truck is fine. It also does not stay running long when idling. In addition, the computer says the truck is running rich and I have sooty exhaust.
I am unsure of the diagnosis at this point. Should I change the MAP Sensor or the Fuel Injectors or maybe the Fuel Sending Unit? Any help would be appreciated.
That truck has many sensors. I would start with a test of the fuel pressure. It should be 31 psi at idle and if you pull the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator it should jump to 41 psi. + - 2 psi on both. The O2 sensors won't cause this or the problem would only occur after the truck has run for a few minutes and the processor has gone into closed loop. The TPS (throttle position sensor) could also cause this symptom. The MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor also does not function until it sees closed loop. You really need a scan tool for this type of diagnosis.
I haVE A 88 RANGER 2.9 I HAD FUELPUMP PROBLEMS TOOK THE LINE ON THE MOTAR OFF TO C IF ANY FUEL WAS COMING OUT AND FINALLY FOUNF THE PROBLEM THE SWITCH IN THE PASS FLOORBOARD NOW IM GETTING A TICKING NOISE BY MY INTAKE ON DRIVERSIDE WHAT COULD IT B ITS TICKING
I have a 1988 ford ranger 2.3. the problem is i hook up the test scanner and get 21 24 67 52 87 but to get the tester to work i have to ground the plug to the fuel pump relay. i get 12v at top pin if i jump this pin to the one right below it the high voulne pump kick in but the intank pump will not. do i have a ground problem somewhere in the wiring harness?
I have a 89' ford ranger that I belive has a fuel guage problem. one night, i went to put gas in it and the guage read 1/4 tank. i get in after pumping, and the tank said 1/2. i know that i put as much as the tank coul hold, so i know that the tank is full. The next morning, i get in to start, and the guage went straight to empty. Ever sence then i have been going off of the mileage. If anyone know what the problem is, please let me know.
thanks for reading my complaints
My aunt has a 1996 Ford Ranger 2WD. The fuel gauge just began to read empty and the tank was filled the previous day. The truck is on the island of Hawaii and sits unused for about half the year as she travels between California and Hawaii. She just arrived back. I am wondering if this model has a history of failing fuel flouts or this may be an electrical issue. She has checked the fuse box but is unsure which numbered fuse could be faulty. Is there any evidence or history of a common design malfunction in this make and model? I will be helping her correct this problem over the weekend and any input would certainly be helpful. Thanks
My Ford ranger 1989 ran out of gas a few days ago, put 20$ in it, but it still won't start, cannot find the fuel injectors nor the air filter (i heard a few tablespoons of gas on the air filter may start it) No problems with this truck until it ran out of gas (fuel gauge has not been working for over 5 years, this time I let it go too long it it finally ran out of gas)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Debbie
1987 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab with 2.9 V6 engine, starts easily runs well for about four miles then it starts stumbling and stuttering, puffs black smoke from the exhaust. If I accelerate moderately or hart it will respond appropriately until I let off the accelerator, then it goes back to the skipping, stumbling problem (as if it is flooding out). If I am on the interstate and have my speed control engaged it will run smoothly for a short time, cut-out, re-engage, run smoothly for a short while, cut-out, re-engage over and over. Can you offer any advice? The computer brain box was replaced last year. The engine has about 160,000 miles on it.
I have a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT 5 speed, just replaced timing belt, new distributor and cap. It runs good until you shut it off. Sometimes it will start with no problems, sometime it won't start at all. Leave it set for 15 minutes an it will start right up. If it doesn't start you can shoot it with either and it will run as long as your shooting it. When you stop it dies. Wait 15 minute starts right up. Some type of fuel problem?
1989 Ford Ranger 2.9 litre. It starts but dies immediately. The fuel pump does not run even though it is new. I have replaced fuel filters, spark plugs, throttle control sensor, distributor and wires, cleaned out the gas tank.
I have a 1988 Ford Ranger,6 cylinder, fuel injection, hydralic clucth, while driving the car stops running, 45 minutes later the truck turns over and I'm running again until it happens again. What could be the problem?
Have an 87 ranger that I was driving the other night and ran out of gas on a highway. After pulling over and getting some fuel in the tank, the motor will crank but not fully turn over. Spits fuel with carb. lid off. Cant seem to see any spark comming from the plugs though. Any suggestions?
Truck is flooding from idle to wide open.new tps,new maf,new fuel pressure regulator,if you disconnect the tps sensor truck stops flooding at idle, but will not respond to the gas feed, also checked the auto idle valve and its good.computer unit was replaced last year.doesnt matter if system is in open or closed mode, floods all the time
Hi. I read the old message you posted about your fuel gauge. Mine is an 88 and is identical, in fact now it don't read at all. Did you ever find out what it was?
I have a 89 ford ranger it starts fine but when I go to take off it acts like it is flooding out and tries to die. when I get it to clear out it will run but if I give it to much gas it acts like it is choking but when I let off of the gas it picks back up and goes but I cant push the gas far enough to get it to pull long hills.I Ichanged the ignition module, coil, plugs, wires, distributer, fulefilter, air filter, and the throttle positioner sensor any help would be appreciated
I get going down the road the truck cuts out on me after it warms up on me and when it cuts out on me it blows black smoke out of the tail pipe. i put new plugs and wires in it a new coil and a used computer in it
1988 Ford ranger 2.9 v6 2wd, replaced fuel tank, sending unit, low pressure pump, high pressure pump and filter, still no pressure at the schrader valve what else is there?
I have a similar problem mine idels good but give it gas and it dies out like it is starving for gas.Changed carbs and addeded a fuel regulator by holley to see if it may be getting to much fuel. Still does same give it gas and dies out unless you pat the gas at time it tries to die out. Then still want catch up and run like it should cant go through all the gears. Could you help or what did you end up doing to cure your problem.
Thanks Mike
I had the same problem with my fuel and temp guages (1986 Ranger STX, 2.9 fuel injection). I would never show more than 2/3 tank or more than 1/3 warm. My mechanic replaced a resistor in the dash. There are two available and the first one sent the readings too high. With the second, things are normal and I'm seeing a sticking thermostat two years later; Glad I had this fixed!
My truck does the same thing....
Did you find any answers?
I have replaced my egr valve fuel filters and pump. Seem to help for a while then back to the symptons.. Stumped
I just had that problem. i took it to ford. the rangers had a problem with the 02 sensor ground circut. most likely this is ur problem. i do not know if anyone other than ford can fix this problem. the o2 sensor will be damaged and will not work. the sensor and the ground circut will need replaced. DO NOT replace the 02 sensor without fixing the ground circut.
