Lost power this weekend in my 1987 Prowler travel trailer. Had a vacuum pluged into an outlet with GFI, other outlet had a space heater. Fuses seem ok. Can a GFI take out all the power in the trailer. The GFI does not reset and I can not test it.
Alan, sure you can test it - turn off your 20 and 15 amp breakers, remove the GFI receptacle and if you do not have a voltage meter temp. replace the GFI with a standard 15 or 20 amp receptacle. Wire it the same way (black or gold screws are "hot" or black wire, silver screws are neutral and green screws are green ground or bare wire. Put recep back in box you removed it from, turn breakers back on and plug something in to the recep to see if it works. If it still does not work then the GFI is not the problem - look at your breakers again and test with a meter or you possibly have another GFI in the same circuit ahead of the one you question..........If you cannot reset your GFI keep this in mind - it will not allow a reset without supply voltage to the GFI terminals. If you have power on the replacment test receptacle (mentioned above) and you still can not get a reset then I would bet you have a faulty GFI and would replace it...... standard 15 amp device runs about $8 and a 20 amp about $15. Ensure to replace the faulty GFI with the same amp rating. (15-15 and 20-20)
