74 Diamond MH w/360, New alternator, volt reg, starter relay. Battery keeps going dead when driving (especially with wipers or headlights on. When the key is turned on ammeter guage on dash shows discharge. Have disconnected starter cables, coil wires, alt wires, pulled fuses and guage still shows discharge. The only wires that I disconnected that make the discharge stop is the Electronic ignintion controller. What else can I do to find the short? I do have a multi meter but not sure how to use to detect a short.

Hello Skip InIowa,
I have had something kind of like your problem with my 77' motorhome. Inside the distributor is a 8 sided wheel that replaced the old style cam. What it is called I don't know but it seemed my problem was, that wheel had a pin that kept the timing. When the pin failed and let the wheel get off timing because it will move very slowly around the shaft it seemed to discharge my system. After I put the pin back in place it seemed to cure the discharge problem. Also I would take the car? down to Autozone and have them check the charging system for free. Maybe your amp meter is faulty, or ignition switch is bad? I hated to replace everything before finding my own cure, maybe any of my things will help you.

Tim, the pin was in place. Thanks for the tip, because it may come in handy some day.
I was tinkering around and discovered what may be the problem. I had the key off, turned on the radio (which does not play with the key off) and then I pulled on the emergency flasher (located on the steering column). The turn signal lever happen to be pulled down for a left turn and when the flashers started to flash the radio played in time with the flashers. When I pushed the turn signal lever back to the middle position the radio stopped playing. The cruise control unit also clicks with the flashers when this all happens. Any idea what my next step would be???
