Battery Disconnect Switches Art 2-5-04
I bought two battery disconnect switches that have a knob on top to unscrew and effectively disconnect the positive side of the 12 volt battery. The switches are rated 12-24 volts, 100 amps. I plan to use them on my RV house and automotive batteries. There are knife switches available, rated at 250 amps which are about 10 times the cost. What is the average draw on a battery, say for engine starting or any other heavy demand? Also, is there any danger in a 100 amp rated switch? Is 250 amp overkill?

I use one on my toad but had to use a lock washer as ever once in a while the car would not crank unless I re-tightened the knob.

I would use a knife switch on the coach batteries as it would handle the bigger draw.
You can even buy a boat battery swich - rotary - and it will handle the heavy amps and costs less than the kife switch.
Hope this helps.
