I have a '98 ford ranger v6 at ac
99k miles......
MY QUESTION: when I start the engine there is a terrible knock emitting from the alternator, all systems seem to be charging, new serpentine installed 1000 miles ago (1 month) and no electrical problems and no other symptoms, can anyone help
Take a long screwdriver and put one end against the alternator and put the other end against your ear. Make sure that knock is from the alternator, because typically a knock is *NOT* an alternator noise.
The only thing that I can think of that would "Knock" is the cooling fan on the belt side. It's easy enough to replace and you can tell if that's it by removing the belt and spinning by hand (look for witness marks).
Maybe the Idler Pulley has lost its spring tension to it, and banging back and forth. 99 thousand miles, maybe the bearings in the Alternator are really that bad. The screw driver up to the ear does work. so does a rubber hose, or going to Harbor Freight, for a Mechanics Stethoscope for $4.99.
