Spark plug wire too hot scott 10-23-03
This has been driving me nuts. I have an 87 cruise air II, 454 standard carb, 70K miles. After about 120 miles of highway travel the engine begins to develope a engine studder under load. I know some of this is carb problem but the back spark plug wire on the passenger side begins to breakdown from the inside. Replace the wire and runs fine except for a little carb problem. Any ideas?

I would imagine that the sparkplug that goes to the wire you replaced is pretty black or gunked up. It sounds to me like you've got an over-rich condition; check all the plugs. If all the plugs are black to some extent or to an equal degree, your carb needs a rebuild. If only one or 2 plugs are black, do a tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) and see if that clears it up. If not, rebuild the carb and check jetting.

Something to be aware of: a large vacuum leak will also cause the motor to run rich; before throwing a lot of parts at this, check for a vacuum leak!

Hope this helps!

The question is about the right rear spark plug wire. This wire does get pretty hot on the 454. I would suggest checking for a manifold leak at that point. If not already installed, a set of steel sleeves around the plug boots would be advisable.

Just bought an 88 super chief and had a major GM dealer fix a bunch of stuff on the 454. One thing they installed was a heat shield for the plug wires. That's supposed to help. Going away next week for 10 days so still won't know if it does. Anyone else have experience with one?

At 70,000 all wires should be replaced and ck for exhaust leak. John

Listers,

I'm having a similar issue with my 1988 Airstream motorhome. It has a chevy 454 on a P-30 chassis w/ standard carb. My #1 plug wire (passenger side rear) keeps getting seriously fried. Last wire only lasted 30 miles before the boot was burnt to a crisp. I have a Holley 12-801 fuel pump in the rear and it has been finicky (deteriorating wiring). Could it be that exhaust heat alone would be enough to cause such a quick failure? I also have aftermarket manifolds that might increase the heat. I don't see any heat shields: anyone have a part number?

Right now i'm only on 7 cylinders. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1995 Class A Airstream 34 FT with a 454 Chevy Engine on a P30 Chassie. I Need to replace the radiator hoses. Would you send me the Delco or GM Part Numbers of these or where I can find this info? Yours truly, T Riley.

On the P30/32 chassis, GM installed a shield on the driver's side of the engine but not on the passenger side. I think they were trying to keep some heat away from the master cylinder but not sure. Mine has a shield on the right side that was added.

The plug shields I mentioned earlier are metal sleeves installed over the plug boots. They effectively protect the boots from the manifold heat.
