Truck/trailer elect hookup Dale Hamilton 9-3-03
Just purchased my first- an old 38' Vega 5ther. Wiring was totally trashed, so I pulled it all out and am now rewiring. The 7 pin electrical hookup to the tow vehical has a black wire marked "Charge" on the pin diagram that came with the trailer. Where does this come from, where does it go, and what does this do? Could this posibly connect to the alternator accessory terminal on the tow vehicle. Or maybe it should go to charge the trailer battery. Help? Also, there's a string of clearence lights up top- where do these wire into. many thanks in advance.

I'm working on a project, I'm trying to get a Utility body put on a 2003 GMC/Chevy truck chassis, the problem I'm having is how do I go from a 3 wire lighting hook up (Brake, Tail, and Turn are on SEPARATE wires!) to a 2 wire hook up( Brake and Turn are on ONE circuit, Tail are on another)?

I'm really having a time with this, please help!

You're correct. the black "charge" wire runs from the tow vehicle's electrical system to the trailer's batteries. The usual connection is through an isolator which will keep the batteries of the tow and trailer seperated, but allow both to be charged by the tow vehicle's alternator. An alternative method is to use a constant duty relay that makes the connection from the charging source to the trailer's batteries when the ignition key is on. The marker lights will be connected to your tail light pin.

Jeez, thanks Sam. I think I can go ahead and complete my hookup now.

Glad to help.

No problem Lee, just go to an RV supply store and buy a three wire to two wire converter. Two brands come to mind, Max-Lite and Brite-Lite, either one will do the job for you.
