Cutlass Supreme 3.1 electrical problem continuted Scott 8-21-03
Today I went to start it up and the engine would turn over but it would not start. I soon realized that the fuel pump was not engaging. My radio would not turn on either when I pushed the key forward, nor did any dash lights. I checked the fuses in the car and none seemed to be blown so I checked the larger ones under the hood. I noticed a large 30amp fuse was blown so I picked up a new one and when I put it in it immediately popped again. The 30amp fuse that keeps popping is for the fuse box according to the manual. The fuel pump however does not seem to come on, hence it not starting. I'm sure that it powers more than the fuse box but that is all it mentions in the manual. I assume they're reffering to the main fuse box in the glove box. Headlights, tailights, brake lights, dome lights, power windows ect. still work. I spoke to a mechanic and he told me to check the wires coming out of the starter or a short in the starter itself. I dont know, I have checked wires but cannot see all of them because it's so jam packed. Now this is where its gets strange, I picked up a new fuse and put it in after checking out the wiring and sure enough it popped. So, for $h!ts and giggles I tried to start the car with the remote start. Bam, car fires up. BTW the fuse wasn't even in there now. Shut it off and would never start again with remote nor normal way. It's just plain weird. Obviously there is a short somewhere for the fuse to keep popping but why in the name of god did the car start without the fuse in? Then, not start again right after that? Unless that fuse has nothing to do with the car starting but happens to be on the same circuit as the problem? Apparently that fuse is not in charge of engaging the fuel pump because it started without the darn thing in but when the car cranks it is obvious it is not getting fuel. And yes, there is gas. Is your head spinning mine sure is.
