My 454 has the timing point on the bottome of the balancer. When trying to set or check the timing, which plug wire do you use to connect a timing light

#1 or #6, which ever one is most easily gotten to.
Re: setting ignition timing richard 6-13-05
1990 455 gm. marine application-houseboat. tuneup completed but engine will not "time" with light. yes, number one cylinder is on compression, the "zero"mark on crank lines up on zero and rotor is pointing to number one plug. ALL is well until it cranks. Runs rough, and with timing light, shows extreme advance. When I get engine within range of proper mark, "btdc-8 degrees", engine will stall. please help.
Re: NOOOO ignition timing Russel 7-22-03
Do not use #1 or #6 to time this engine if you use the pointer that is visible from below. Much easier to use a mirror to see it also. That pointer is 90 degrees after the top one. You use cylinder #8 when reading to this pointer. IF you have one of the really odd ones that the pointer is 180 degrees out you would use #6.
Re: setting ignition timing Chuck 7-23-03
WOW, Here i was thinking that anyone asking what number tro use OUGHT not be doing their own tune, THEN I see I am wrong, as THEY have special pointers on most 454 Chevy MH AMASING,

Makes me wonder what else I do not know about these awesome beasts! (BEASTS=CLASS A MH)

Anyone have a GOOD PLACE TO order a P Chassis Four or more core raditor as I trully need to replace or rod-out mine and new core.. BUT I am runnning into trouble as "They say They can't find my MH in any books as it is a lesser name, WINDJAMMER (loooks EXCATYLY like many southwinds I have seen Wonder if tyhey took over that styled or engeeried body I must admit)

RE Cap:

Learned new trick about timming marks Thanks Guys,

Question about where to source a RADITOR for P Chassis
Re: NOOOO ignition timing Sam Watson 7-23-03
Thanks Russel, so you'd use #8 or #5, whichever is handiest?
Re: NOOOO ignition timing Russel 7-24-03
I use #8 cause you can reach up and clip the pickup on it from below while on a creeper. #5 is not accessible from below because of the brake and shield interference. I've broke more inspection mirrors than I care to count doing these. (have spare ones cut all ready to put in the holder)
