Is it on bright or dim? If it is on dim with the engine running as compared to bright when the key is on with engine off, then most likely the 7.5 amp fuse (#15) in the instrument fuse panel is blown. If it is on bright then it can be two things, either the connection thru to the alternator is bad inside the alternator or the resistor that goes around the bulb is burned.
The best thing to do is pop that bulb, and add a Volt Gauge. Sometime you'll get some bleed throe from the alternator, and the light will barely light up. It doesn't mean a thing, it's just irritating. If the volt gauge is showing 14.4 volts, 13.6 volts is ideal at 70 degrees, you really don't have anything to worry about. Most Factory installed gauges and idiot lights never were very reliable.
Remember the basics, voltage is pressure and amperage is flow. If memory serves me correctly, the charge light is turned on by the circuit grounding through the alterator stater and turned off by opposing AC current from the stater, preventing the circuit from grounding.
Sam is correct. And if you have a alternator light lit, you probably have or will have a problem. I feel you should have your alternator tested. All NAPA stores to it no charge.
