I have just bought a new trailer (2001 Westwinds W185) and have been experiencing battery discharging. It appears that even if I'm hooked-up to a power supply, and the Dometic fridge turned ON, it drains my battery. It does so even when running on Gas. It was recommended I install a cut-off swith on the neg wire from the battery but that does not solve the problem. I have very short self sufficiency and alway have to recharge the battery. Shouldn't the fridge draw its power from the outlet instead of draining the battery. Anything similar and any suggestions?
Your refrigerator requires 12 volt power to operate, even if you are running it on gas, or a/c electric. It will, over a period of time, run your battery down. You may try adding another battery to your unit, and running with two batteries. If you do this, remember to put your main ground on one battery, and your main positive, to the other battery, this will insure equal charging. Also, I would suggest using the same battery type and size when you add the second battery.
Make sure when you are plugged into shore power that the converter is turned on and then check with a volt meter at the battery that you have 13.5 volts (or there abouts). If not you charging section of your converter is not putting out. Check fusees and wiring to be sure all are ok. If not problem is found take battery to be tested as it may be bad. Good luck
We just bought a 1998 VW Rialta, and after about three days, the battery is so dead we need a jump!
The folks at Mike Thompson RV haven't offered ANY solutions, and its getting frustrating. After searching the many custom appliances that have been installed, we found that there appears to be a CO sensor that is ALWAYS on!
Is this draining the battery? Is this installed in other RVs? Finally, how do we turn it off??
In addition to the CO detector, you most likely have a Propane leak detector as well. Just like a smoke alarm, these don't have "off" switches, so are a constant current draw. You may have several other current parasitic devices as well. One suggestion is to install a master cut-off switch on the house battery, these are available at RV supply stores.
