I have had my Cobalt in the shop 3x's now for brake lockup. This final time it finally locked up for the technician. While driving the brakes just start to drag and after driving for a period of time when you get out of the car the rims are so hot that you can't touch them. They have adjusted the brake light switch, first visit, then the second visit they checked all lines and calipers and found nothing wrong. I got the car back and the very next day they locked up while getting off the interstate. All four! Again too hot to touch the rims. Now they are going to replace the rotors, calipers and pads. I personally think it is the ABS module going bad. I would think that they would have to replace the brake fluid also because it has probably broke down in viscosity, but what do I know I'm a woman. Any thoughts???? It sure has my GM dealership puzzled. I have 15,400 miles on the car.
The brake fluid wont be damaged by heat that dosen't actualy cause your brakes to fade out, but the calipers might by cooked.
In the bad old days we just looked for why the master wasn't releasing completly. Now it could be a bad brake booster, someone has added the improper fluid to the brakes, this can happen durring the Pre Delivery inspection, the valves in the anti lock module have buggered up. The anti lock module being less likly as it has seperate vaves for all the wheels. I would write a leter directly to GM and notify them that you have an ongoing problem. It is unlikly that GM will Know as this type of nightmare can be all considered a come back. The factory wont cover parts changes for a repeted complaint. It would be good practice just to notify and get a response from GM concerning this to cover your posible future trouble, after all brake wear is not warantable unless atributed to another cause.
I too have been having the same problem with my SS Cobalt 2005. So far I had to replace the clutch after 12,000 miles and the day I went to pick it up there was an oil leak that they couldn't explain so the car stayed in the garage another week. Five weeks after that I could not shift from 1 to 2nd gear and the brakes would go down to the floor. Now that cars been in the garge for over a week now. I've been charged $1500 for the clutch and they can't guarentee it won't happen again. I can't seem to get any answers to my question. They said the burnt clutch was due to abusive driving which is not the case. I've always driven standards and never had any problems. Any suggestions as to why all this is happening and are any of these problems related and how?
I actually got my car back today since it has been at the dealership for 2 1/2 weeks, they replaced the calipers, rotors and brake pads...they test drove it and it still locked up. They called the engineers at GM and they said either the master cyl, brake booster or brake lines should start to be eliminated out of the equation...well, they started with the brake booster and so far so good it seems to be okay. I just hope that it continues. Thank you for your response.
