P30 Smoking Tag Axle brakes Joe C 8-7-06
My problem on the P30 is not quit the same as the others on this forum. The braking system works fine for the front dics and rear drum but not the rear drum on the Tag Axsle. It is a 1997 Fleetwood with 46 K miles. All's well until this season. First time out in July the Tag Axsle brakes seized up overheated and smoking along the freeway. Cooled off and retuned to the shop 3 times like that with repaired pads shoes etc and last time the vacuum assisted controller replaced but failed again within 50 miles. Hoever it works fine on test drives and around town but once out on the trip Bang it locked-up again!? We are stumped !! Any suggestion are most welcome. Thanks.

Thanks very much for the tips Mike. I did several stops each time at 10 mile intervals stoping and feeling the hubs and after 3 or for stops perfectly ok on all wheels then proceed for about another 30 and Bang it happens again smell and smoky brakes all over the freeway again!!! It's only on the rear Tag Axsle brakes all the others are cool. It has a vacuum assisted hydraulic controller which we have replced but only improved the distance travel by may be 30 -40 miles. There is no warning and usually not riding on the brake however must have used brake slowing down on intervals and it takes about 10-12 miles before overheating and I usuully smell it first and stop right away. Most interestingly after cooling off in about 1-11/2 hrs I can drove back to the shop without any further locked-up even if I tested braking many times along the way. It will bbe good untill next trip. Most frustrating and can't even take it to a new shop for at least 3 weeks due to the busy period of the year. By then holidays are over. Joe

Can you tell if all wheels are locking up or just the tag.??What I would do is take it for a short trip and before any lock up,stop and feel all the hubs and see how hot thay are.If you have made a few stops ok if all hubs are warm. Then see if any one wheel feels much hotter than the others. Were the brake hoses changed, sometimes they start coming apart inside and won't let fluid back to the master causing brakes to get hot and lock up.From your post sounds like just the tag axle is locking up.Was the system flushed with new fluid.?Try the heat test first and may give you a clue to whats going on. Good Luck MIKE

I go along with what Mike said---try replacing the flex hoses---and new fluid--they are known to fail

Well Joe I would try a new hose first, but just wondering about the vacuum assist is only on the tag.?? Wondering if you might have a vacuum leak somewhere.I don't think there is any info in my truck manual but I will look thru it.I think the tag may have been added by the coach builder.Does that vacuum booster drive a second master cylinder.?? Just seems like a lot of volume of brake fluid needed to work all six wheel cylinders from one master. Try the hose thing and by the way I like the new braided hoses, you can get from summit.Don't know about fit on the tag though. Good Luck and keep us posted. MIKE

Thanks Mike and Richard for your info. You are right there is a second cylinder involed with a large diaphram attached and 2 hoses into it from the controller. Both the pressure and hoses were checked and make sur ok after the instalation of the conbtroller. So it could be the second cylinder being stucked? But if a stucked valve or cylinder it will surely stuck again even after cooled off? I can't repeat the failure every time after the brakes cooled off even driving over 150 miles one time? Will see the garage in 2 weeks for my appointment then see what happens. Thanks again. Joe

Joe most of those vacuum boosters work by putting a vacuum on both sides of a large diaphram, then when you press on the brake pedal it allows air into one side to assist with pressure to apply the brakes. If you are losing vacuum it will slowly apply the brakes.Don't know your set up but could you lash up a temporary vacuum gage and see whats going on with the vacuum. OK Joe now we kinda figured out how it works. Was the tag system flushed with new fluid.?Still could be a hose.If the tag cylinder does not return back far enough the return hole for the fluid stays blocked and fluid can't return to the tag master. You said the tag vacuum booster was replaced it could be the push rod may be to far out.Usually if you don't mess with the adjustment it comes out ok,but if the new booster is just a bit thinner it might push to far forward on the master cylinder.Or if the push rod was turned out a thread or two it will not wave enough clearance.Just a few more ideas, Good Luck Mike
