I have recently acquired a 1994 Southwind on a P30 chassis and have developed a growling noise after startup, releasing the park brake, stepping on the brake pedal and shifting to drive. It worsens with additional brake pedal pressure or steering wheel movement. I have noticed no reduction in braking or steering, just the noise that makes me think a power steering pump is going out on an old car. Any ideas?
I fixed my problem--it was a stopped up vent hose coming off the power steering reservoir cap. Apparently, the blockage interfered with the pump's ability to supply additional fluid and pressure on demand, causing the pump to cavitate and thus, the "growl" I was hearing. When the cap was loosened, the noise was immediately relieved and the hose was checked out. The hose was routed to the wheel well and accumulated road grime but is re-routed away from the wheel now.
