Re: P30 chassis emergency brake by Lynn Wilbur
Post New Message Temporarily getting around this problem is relatively simple. Just to the back of the transmission and on the drivers side of the vehicle the cables from the manual parking brake, the auto brake actuator and the brake drum(which is on the driveline right behind the trans)come together. Remove the pin connecting the auto park actuator cable to the arm assembly (if the unit is locked in auto park, it will be somewhat difficult because of spring tension but can be done.)Then, be sure to check the adjustment on the brake shoes. Test by engaging the manual parking brake and trying to move in forward and reverse. If it holds, you are in business and if not, it needs adjusting. To adjust, there are two slots on the back of the drum with dust clips in them. Remove the clips and move the MH so one of the slots is at the top. The adjuster is just a little off center toward the drivers side. Adjust for more brake shoe tension by rolling the adjuster up with a screwdriver or brake adjusting tool. (A medium size flatblade screwdriver with a v ground in the blade works best.) Just be sure to check again by moving the MH so you don't have too much drag on the shoes.
