Transmission Brake? R. Starr 6-22-05
I have a 1978 Pace Arrow 28' motor home. The problem I have is that while driving I have a severe vibration. Tires out of balance has been eliminated. With motor home jacked up with all wheels off of the ground and transmission engaged I have the vibration. If I disconnect the drive shaft I have no vibration. When I then put in gear I have the vibration back. I do not believe it is in the transmission. But I do wonder if the brake drum on shaft out of transmission has lost a weight or has become out of balance some other way. I am looking for some thoughts on and if it is the drum, where might I find one of these and if it is much of a job to change.
Thanks in advance
R. Starr

Get your WHOLE mutli piece drive shaft balanced, it costs about 150.00 I had MINE gone thru with all new HEAVY (Much larger Ujoints) for 450.00 It is more likey the CARRIER Bearning of the shaft or one of the ujoints.. then it is the Brake Drum Either way they can balance the shaft with that big ole Brake Drum attched as this is not the first onbe they have seen, UNLIKE it was for many of us users to see a GRAINT brake drum on our drive shaft..Kinda weird I thought when I first saw mine, I am not sure why they choose to do it that way BUT I have to guess it has something to do with sheer size and weight of our coachs.

If, after you have the drive shaft re-balanced, you still have the problem, contact a local truck shop that can high-speed balance your wheels AND cut the tires to round. I had a similar issue with my 23' Coachmen -- swapped tires, rebalanced wheels, rebalanced drive shaft and replaced u-joints -- but it turned out my tires were not round! They used a laser sight, cut down down the high spots, no vibration at any highway speed. But I don't have a brake on my drivetrain so you're problem may be there after all.
