I have a Prevost with a 8V92TA 475hp and the engine brake slowly worked less and less until it stopped completely. I have had it to several repair shops that repaired it but it only worked for a day or so and quit again. Does amybody know who I might ask for some advice? I am tired of guessing games. I have had to take off 4 days from work to get it fixed and it still doesn't work. I'm planning a 5,000 mile trip in a week pulling a heavy trailer and would like it to perform like it is supposed to. Thanks in advance.
Ron, the engine brake switch on your engine is actuated by a micro switch spring in the buffer screw of the governor. This small spring inside the buffer actuates the switch for the engine brake. First I would have the spring and micro switch checked. I have seen many of the springs break and with engine vibrations the spring coils together and everytime it is set the spring coils further until it is too short to extend out of the buffer. Give that a try. That's another guess, but I don't have my hands on your engine so that is the best I can do.
Two of the places I went to were genuine Detroit Diesel Allison dealers. The independent diesel shop fixed it the best but that didn't last long. A person on another board said that there is somebody pretty sharp on Detroit Diesels on this board. I was hoping to hook up with that person. Any ideas?
Joe, I took my motorhome to Detroit Diesel this morning and asked them to check the spring you told me about. Guess what?? It was broken like you suggested. They replaced it and I drove it about 100 miles afterward and it worked like it used to. I can't thank you enough. May the lord be with you.
